ABOUT ORTHODONTICS

Orthodontic Treatment for Children

We follow a two phased approach with orthodontics treatment in children.

We strongly advocate early preventative treatment for children. Identifying a problem when a child is between the ages of 7-10 has the benefit of corrective treatment before it escalates and will provide harmony and balance during the critical years of facial development. When the problems are detected early, the orthodontist has a better opportunity to modify, accelerate, delay and in some instances only monitor the child's facial growth.

Early intervention is crucial in cases where there may be concerns of abnormal jaw development, cross bites, largeoverbite, insufficient space or congenitally missing teeth. This may decrease or even eliminate the need for extractions, lengthy orthodontic treatment and/or jaw surgery at a later time.

Thumb sucking, tongue thrust and mouth-breathing are habits that may also require early intervention.

Phase 2 will begin when most of the permanent teeth have appeared. If required, braces are put on the teeth to correct concerns and bite alignment. Because of the early preventative treatment the programme in Phase 2 are usually not as extensive and focusses mainly on corrective manipulation

Identifying a bad bite in children when they are still as young as
between 7-10 and taking corrective treatment then already, will
reduce the intensity of treatment at a later stage.
